The Oxford Maqam: Presenting the UK’s premier Arabic ensemble, the Oxford Maqam, on the occasion of the launch of their highly anticipated album 'The Wax Cylinder Recordings'. Paying tribute to the Nahda era, the Oxford Maqam embrace the sounds of the Arab Renaissance that was an extraordinary period of musical innovation in the Middle East. Their vintage repertoire has gained popularity for its mesmerising recreation of Egyptian and Levantine songs that date from the 19th Century to the early cinema era, offering a lively and informed insight into the urban musical imaginary back then. In this album, the Oxford Maqam recreate the recording experience of popular Egyptian artists at the dawn of recording technology and feature both playful and melancholic melodies, improvisational dexterity as well as outstanding singing combined with acclaimed classical poetry. Taking place on 3 February, 2017 at King's Place, 90 York Way, London N1 9AG.
