With a 72-hour humanitarian truce being called today as the latest development in the Israel-Gaza conflict situation, top lawyer Michael Mansfield QC will host an event this evening, bringing together leading international lawyers to discuss the continued crimes committed in Gaza.
He will be calling on President Abbas to recognise the International Criminal Court (ICC) so referrals can take place against senior Israeli officials for war crimes. In the press release, Mansfield QC condemns all breaches of international humanitarian and human rights law occurring in Israel-Palestine.
In his official statement: “This isn’t new: Gaza has been under Israeli occupation since 1967 and Israel’s has a long history of disproportionate and indiscriminate use of fire power including the use of flechette bombs: explosives surrounded by darts that strip flesh off the bone.
“There can be no justification for the murder of 852 Palestinian civilians (249 of whom are children) compared to two Israeli civilians. The UN condemns Israel’s actions and yet children continue to be slaughtered and families torn apart.
“This is but the most recent chapter in the policy of incremental genocide being perpetrated against the Palestinians by the state of Israel. We call upon Mahmoud Abbas to end this impunity and refer Israel to the ICC for investigation and prosecution for war crimes against humanity.”
Also on the Mansfield Chambers website, there is a link to support the work of Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) and a reference to an open letter by Norwegian medical doctor Mads Gilbert, who is working at the al-Shifa Hospitals in Gaza. Originally published in a Canadian blog run by Richard Hughes, his plea is directed to the international community and US President Barack Obama.
Gilbert writes: “Mr Obama – Do you have a heart? I invite you to spend one night – just one night – with us in Shifa. Disguised as a cleaner, maybe. I am convinced 100% that it would change history. Nobody with a heart AND power could ever walk away from a night in Shifa without being determined to end the slaughter of the Palestinian people.”
